Measure an existing tank
Septic Tank Volume Calculator
Enter the tank's inside dimensions to estimate working liquid volume in US gallons, cubic feet, and liters.
Scope: The size and pumping tools use U.S. residential planning values and EPA guidance. They are not permit calculations.
Volume formulas
How tank volume is calculated
Rectangular tanks use internal length × internal width × liquid depth. Cylindrical tanks use π × (inside diameter ÷ 2)² × internal length.
The calculator converts measurements to feet, calculates cubic feet, then converts the result to US gallons and liters. Never enter a septic tank; use records or measurements taken safely by a qualified professional.
Worked examples
Septic tank volume examples in feet and inches
Use the matching formula for the tank shape, then convert cubic feet or cubic inches to US gallons.
Rectangular: 8 ft × 5 ft × 3.5 ft × 7.48052 = 1,047 gallons Cylindrical: π × (60 in ÷ 2)² × 96 in ÷ 231 = 1,175 gallons Rated capacity reference
Common septic tank dimensions by capacity
These exterior measurements come from A.J. Foss precast concrete models sold in New England. They show why a gallon rating does not define one universal footprint.
| Rated capacity | Example construction | Exterior dimensions | Manufacturer source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 gallons | Fiberglass | 6 ft diameter × 4 ft 7 in high 1.83 m diameter × 1.4 m high | A.J. Foss specification |
| 750 gallons | Precast concrete | 6 ft 7 in × 5 ft 8 in × 4 ft 11 in 2.01 m × 1.73 m × 1.5 m | A.J. Foss specification |
| 1,000 gallons | Precast concrete | 8 ft × 5 ft 8 in × 5 ft 2 in 2.44 m × 1.73 m × 1.57 m | A.J. Foss specification |
| 1,250 gallons | Precast concrete | 8 ft × 5 ft 8 in × 6 ft 2.44 m × 1.73 m × 1.83 m | A.J. Foss specification |
| 1,500 gallons | Precast concrete | 10 ft 10 in × 5 ft 7 in × 5 ft 8 in 3.3 m × 1.7 m × 1.73 m | A.J. Foss specification |
| 2,000 gallons | Precast concrete | 12 ft × 6 ft 6 in × 5 ft 8 in 3.66 m × 1.98 m × 1.73 m | A.J. Foss specification |
| 2,500 gallons | Precast concrete | 12 ft × 6 ft 9 in × 6 ft 5 in 3.66 m × 2.06 m × 1.96 m | A.J. Foss specification |

FAQ
Septic tank volume FAQ
Should I measure inside or outside?
Use internal liquid dimensions. Exterior dimensions include walls and freeboard and can overstate usable capacity.
Does the result prove the tank's rated size?
No. It is a geometric estimate; compartments, baffles and measurement error affect usable capacity.
Can this tell me what tank size I need?
No. Use the size calculator for early planning and follow your permitting authority's required capacity.
What are the dimensions of a 1,000-gallon septic tank?
One A.J. Foss 1,000-gallon precast concrete model measures 8 ft × 5 ft 8 in × 5 ft 2 in outside. Other manufacturers and materials use different footprints, so confirm the model drawing.
Are septic tank dimensions standard?
No. Capacity is a volume rating, not a fixed outside size. Material, compartment layout, structural rating and manufacturer can all change the length, width and height.
